Tom and I have been blessed to have many of our couples include their dog(s) in their engagement photography sessions. Because we do lots of dog photography (see our dogs photography gallery) and love dogs ourselves, we attract dog owners.
Recently, when a couple brings their dog, we started doing an individual photo of the dog if time allows. This is a win win because we get potential images for our portfolio and our clients get a picture of just their fur baby.
Having a dog on a photography session does take some extra planning but the results make you say "Awwwww!!"
Here are some tips for a successful session when bringing your dog:
Have questions? Feel free to contact us! Also check out our engagement session package. You don’t have to have your wedding booked with us to have an amazing engagement session. Any finally, dogs come along on family sessions too but that's a future blog post.

It was no surprise that their July 30, 2017 wedding would be a rustic Colorado mountain ranch wedding in all its splendor! Maura brought her horse to Strawberry Creek Ranch in Granby, Colorado, so we could incorporate their beautiful mare into the couple’s creative photos during their first look.
Because great photography was a priority for Andrew and Maura, they planned for lots of photography time with us beginning before the wedding. Throughout the day and evening, we were able to take quick breaks with them to grab some shots around various parts of the venue.
If amazing breathtaking Colorado wedding photography is a priority check out Strawberry Creek Ranch! The staff is friendly and helpful! Strawberry Creek Ranch is a playground for photography! It includes a rustic century old barn, an amazing ceremony area and deck, an aspen grove, reflective pond, rolling hills and mountain views.
We can’t thank Maura and Andrew enough for choosing Tom and me for their wedding photography; it was such an honor to spend time with this wonderful couple and their families and friends. ~Lucy Miles

]]>Ah yes.....I'm talking about the winter bride....or more specifically the Colorado Winter Bride. Now she doesn't have to be from Colorado to be a Colorado winter bride; but what makes her one, is that she wants most, if not all of her wedding day photos (ceremony, group shots, first look, creatives) OUTSIDE in winter no matter the weather conditions. She loves the outdoors and snowy mountains. She has a warm heart, but typically prefers cold weather to hot. She prays it will be snowing on her wedding day as she finds it positively romantic! Everyone will be freezing except for her. Her family and friends might beg and plead but to no avail. Bundle up people, we are doing this outside!
Interestingly, Tom and I started and ended our 2016 wedding photography season at Devil’s Thumb Ranch in Tabernash, Colorado, photographing the winter bride. Now, to all the winter brides out there, Devil’s Thumb Ranch is the perfect winter mountain wedding venue not to mention a winter wonderland playground!
We had the honor of photographing the wedding of Stephanie and Chris on December 3, 2016. Coming from Minnesota, the Colorado winter was a piece of cake for her and she was the perfect winter bride. Stephanie was fearless; she loved the outdoors, mountains and horses, and Devil’s Thumb Ranch had it all! The ceremony would be outside as would the first look and creatives. Because this was a destination wedding, we had not met Stephanie face to face before her wedding. As soon as we saw how beautiful she looked and how excited she was, we knew it was going to be a warm day no matter what the temperature. We got to work knowing we would get epic images of this wonderful couple!
Stephanie and Chris' wedding was a small intimate destination wedding with 16 people including us. After photographing Stephanie getting ready in the Bunk House, we headed to the stables for the first look. After that, all the guests rode in a horse drawn wagon to the ceremony site. It was was exciting, fun and romantic!! Everyone was bundled up and cozy; it was an experience that no one will ever forget!
The intimate outdoor wedding ceremony was like nothing we had ever photographed. It felt like the rest of the world just slipped away. Tom and I circled the ceremony site in fresh powder up to our knees; it reminded me of being a child playing in the snow. After the ceremony, the guests piled back into the wagon for the ride back down to the stables. The driver asked the horses for a trot and the air was filled with happy excitement. Afterward everyone gathered at The Ranch House to warm up by the fireplace. Then came a fantastic dinner of Australian Lobster Tail and Petite Filet Mignon in the wine cellar, surrounded by fine wine (literally, bottle after bottle on every wall), great conversation and lots of laughter. It was the perfect winter wedding and we are so thankful to Stephanie and Chris for choosing us to photograph it. See for yourself and enjoy!!

After experiencing Stephanie and Chris' wedding day, I encourage brides to think outside the "traditional box". You can make a wedding budget work in many different ways. Sometimes brides feel pressured to please everyone but the day really belongs to just two people so look into your hearts and do what will make your wedding day the most memorable to you.
We'd also like to give a "shout out" to Woodstem Floral & Decor in Winter Park!

]]>So when it comes to planning the timeline and logistics for your wedding day photography, your photographer will ask you if your wedding will be “Traditional” or will you be doing a “First Look”. Let’s define these options so we are all on the same page:
Traditional – the bride and groom do not see each other until their eyes meet as the bride is walking down the aisle.
Nana and Jared - Traditional Wedding CeremonyJared sees Nana for the first time on their wedding day. Wedgewood at Ken Caryl, Littleton, Colorado.
The anticipation in both Jared and Nana's faces is genuine and so emotional. It was an amazing moment!
First Look – when the bride and groom are dressed and ready in their full wedding attire, they see each other for the first time before the ceremony and the intimate meeting is photographed.
Kirsten and Michael - approaching first lookMichael waits as Kirsten approaches. Breckenridge, Colorado
Kirsten and Michael First LookWe like to shoot a first look with the bride approaching the groom from behind. This works best with two photographers. Breckenridge, Colorado
First looks are a cherished moment and images like this end up in the couple's wedding album!
Michael sees Kirsten for the first time!Immediately after their first look, Kirsten and Michael exchanged private vows.
After their First Look, Kirsten and Michael exchanged private personal vows to each other.
So let’s dig into the pros and cons: Traditional
First the pros:
Shanelle and Joey traditional ceremonyJoey is completely focused on Shanelle as she walks down the aisle. Silverthorne, Colorado.
Above, there's no doubt, Shanelle and Joey are completely focused on each other! And below, the groom's face as the bride walks down he aisle is a must have photograph for the bride during a traditional ceremony.
Stacey and Jade traditional ceremony After hours of nervous anticipation, Stacey and Jade see each other for the first time on their wedding day. Baldoria on the Water, Lakewood, Colorado
Now the cons:
Melissa and Dan creativesThese shots of Melissa and Dan were taken after their first look and still a couple of hours before the ceremony. Winding River Ranch, Grand Lake, Colorado
We call the pictures of just the bride and groom their "creatives".
So if you go this route, here are some things that will help you get as much photography time as possible to get epic wedding images.
Frank and Jessica with bridal party Jessica and Frank at Union Station, Denver, Colorado with their bridal party.
Because of a gap between the ceremony end time and start of the reception, we were able to go downtown to take Jessica and Frank's bridal party shots and creatives.
Family ShotA cold January wedding at Devil's Thumb Ranch, Tabernash, CO.
This photo was taken at 4 degrees below zero at Devil's Thumb Ranch in Tabernash, CO!! Talk about having to work quickly. Everyone was ready to go when called. I had a designated family member acting as a "wrangler" helping to call out names from the shot list.

Carly had a vision for bar shots. These bridal party images were all taken before the traditional wedding ceremony.
Carly and Ryan's large bridal party shot taken during the cocktail hour. Beautiful fall wedding at the Gatehouse at Lionsgate Event Center, Lafayette, Colorado. Make sure the bridal party is standing by and ready to go. This will save time and stress for the bride and groom. Communication is key!
Additional creatives during dinner, Brookside Gardens Event Center, Berthoud, ColoradoAfter Chuks and McKenzie were finished eating, we went outside for some additional shots as their guests finished dinner.
These images were taken during dinner after the couple had finished but the guests were still eating.
Stacey and Jade, no look first lookBaldoria on the Water, Lakewood, Colorado, has amazing light coming in from the windows onto the fireplace wall. Stacey and Jade's officiant prays over them during the no look first look.

First Look
The pros:

Eli and Mallory, Ellis Ranch, Loveland, COA great example of the emotion of a "First Look"!!
This First Look was filled with joy! Don't underestimate how emotional a First Look can be!
Here are some cons:
Melissa and Dan creatives. After the first look we proceeded with this image of Melissa and Dan. Winding River Ranch, Grand Lake, Colorado.
This is a cherished image from Melissa and Dan's wedding taken after the first look.
If you decide on a first look, here are some tips to make it go smoothly:
Jen and Anthony First LookOutside the Timber House at Devil's Thumb Ranch, Tabernash, Colorado, Jen and Anthony are about to see each other for the first time on their wedding day.
Having bridal party and family members watch from a distance keeps the First Look private and intimate.
Remember that there are no right or wrong answers; only what feels right to you. Set your priorities beforehand and remember that nothing ever goes perfectly so keep a light hearted approach and trust your photographer. A good professional wedding photographer is going to be able to work quickly, keep things moving and get the shots.

]]>We did their engagement photography session at Dinosaur Ridge in Morrison. We couldn't help but notice Katie's bright green car and her Kermit the Frog backpack (more evidence of her wonderful yet quirky personality). After having a great shoot, we hiked back down to the Dinosaur Museum where we parked, only to find the museum parking lot closed and gated... with our cars locked in! After a few brief moments of panic, we found notes on our windshields telling us the gate was not actually locked. That became the joke for all of our meetings that followed.
Fast forward to their October 21, 2016 wedding at The Barn at Raccoon Creek, in Littleton, Colorado. We had the best Colorado fall weather imaginable. As soon at I met Katie's family, I could see where she got her amazing wit and sense of humor! Katie and Gabe's families and friends were warm and welcoming and we had such a great time with this wonderful group of people! See for yourself in the photos below!
For brides considering The Barn at Raccoon Creek for their wedding venue, we highly recommend it. It has a spacious beautifully decorated bridal suite with amazing light, a gorgeous outdoor ceremony site surrounded by the green grass of the golf course and huge trees. There is also a "signature" hole on the golf course for creative portraits of the bride and groom, and a rustic barn which opens to a beautiful patio area for indoor/outdoor receptions. We'd like to give a shout out to DJ Connection; as always, they did an amazing job and we always love working with them. The time has come!! You have found the man or woman of your dreams! You are planning your wedding; you've set the date and have booked the venue. You have a wedding budget and are trying to stick to it. Next up is the wedding photographer, you have allocated your budget and want beautiful wedding images to share with future generations to come.
So you get started; internet search, Wedding Wire, referrals, bridal shows; you are rocking but WOW, you soon find out there is a vast difference in photographers, wedding images, price ranges, products, policies, processes and you don’t know how to navigate finding the right photographer to deliver the wedding photos of your dreams. How do you know the person you choose will not leave you disappointed on the biggest day of your life?
OK. Breathe. There is never a 100% chance that your wedding images will live up to your expectations. But, there is a way to dramatically increase the chances, and you don’t need to know anything about photography.
Let’s start with the obvious, looking at the photographer’s portfolio. They should have one. If not, it’s best to move to the next contestant. When you look at the images, either on the photographer’s website, at a bridal show etc. they should invoke an emotional response; like “oh my goodness, I love that, I want that!” Or “I can’t picture myself in this image”, “These don’t look like my style”, “they look too dark” etc. What is your gut reaction to the photographer’s style and image quality? Compare wedding photos from one sight to another. Pay attention to the light (or lack thereof) in the images. You will get a feel very quickly for images that are just OK, not so great, really nice, and EPIC. The photos should resonate with you and show beauty, emotion, vibrancy, romance etc. When you see the images that give you that “oh my gosh” feeling, you have found your style. Article continued below pictures!

So now that you found a few portfolios that give you goose bumps, it’s time to ask some questions. An email inquiry is a great way to reach out to photographers. Include your wedding date to check availability and request pricing at this point as well. You may as well know up front where they fall in your budget. The response should be quick, friendly and informative. If it’s not, it’s an indication of what kind of customer service you will get later on, and that is critical. The photographer should also invite you to talk via an in person meeting or by phone. If the pricing is within your budget, don’t hesitate to accept a meeting. Tom and I don’t even mention booking at the first meeting unless the couple asks about it. If you are pressured, that is another red flag that the photographer does not have YOUR best interest at heart, which is finding the right photographer for you. It’s part of the booking process for photographers to meet with many couples. Some book and some don’t.
So you have a few meetings set up. Here are some questions to ask and how to evaluate some of the responses you will hear.
Now you should already have an idea because you looked at the photographer’s website portfolio but if you are not sure, definitely ask. Some photographers will put only a handful of pictures on the website but have shot a ton of weddings, others only have a handful of images because they only shot one wedding.
If the photographer does not have more than a few weddings under his/her belt, your risk may be high that you are not going to get the highest quality wedding photography. This will most likely be a reason for a cheap photographer; everyone has to start somewhere. The wedding photographer is challenged to work quickly, under a lot of pressure. He or she has to coordinate and pose not only the couple, but also large groups, families, children, rowdy groomsmen etc. Small details such as the rings must be captured in perfect focus and light. You have to know your equipment inside and out and be able to work in all types of light. Even with all the experience that Tom has, most weddings are very hard work. There are extreme pressures, time constraints, dealing with nervous couples, people everywhere, family dynamics and so much more. There are things that can, and do go wrong at every wedding. Once a photographer has shot a lot of weddings, they usually will no longer be the cheapest out there because they have paid their dues in sweat and realize how much is at stake.
Be wary of a photographer with little wedding experience, even if they have a fancy camera and have experience in other types of photography. A fancy camera doesn’t make an awesome photographer, any more than a great guitar makes an incredible musician. Many times when someone wants to be a photographer and is just starting out, they “don’t even know what they don’t know”, and your wedding is not their practice time.
Epic Ring ShotRing shots are always a must have for the bride and make a great addition to the wedding album
Ring shots in perfect focus are tough; special equipment, manual focus, a steady hand and lots of experience required.
Special DanceStacey looks on as Jade dances with her daughter during the reception at Baldoria on the Water, Lakewood, Colorado
Although this dancing shot could have been captured from many angles, seeing Stacy looking on at Jade dancing with her daughter brings this image to the heart.
2. How will you light my ceremony and reception?
This is the mother load question; lighting can make or break a wedding photograph. If they say “I’m a natural light photographer” this may translate to “I don’t know how to light”. Follow up by asking, “what if there is no natural light such as at the reception at 10 pm?” We love natural light too and jump for joy when we have great outdoor or window light, however, it’s not practical to think you can get the best results without help from lighting. If the great light is not there, the professional wedding photographer has to create it. A good photographer should at this point be very clear about how he will light your wedding. He should talk about on and/or off camera flash, light modifiers, setting up light stands at your reception, being able to overpower the mid-day sun, what he will do if not allowed to use flash in the church etc. Once a photographer learns how to light, has made the investment in all the equipment involved and knows how to use it, it will make a huge difference in the quality of your images. When you look at a portfolio and can’t quite figure our why the images look so amazing, it’s most likely the light.
This is another factor that will separate cheap photographers from ones who charge more and it is well worth the cost.
BubblesHappy couple gets bubbly send off at Ellis Ranch, Loveland, Colorado

Sparkler heartKirsten and Michael's sparkler photo, the last shot of the night. Breckenridge, Colorado
Kirsten and Michael's sparkler heart was captured with a slow shutter speed, and lighting both in front and behind them.
3. How much direction will you be giving on my wedding day?
I wanted to bring this up as it pertains to weddings because I have an introverted personality and it’s always a hard part for me (thank goodness Tom is not afraid to take control of a group). It is practically impossible to be a 100% “photojournalistic fly on the wall” photographer at a wedding. Grandma is not going to pose herself and the groomsmen are not going to come up with ideas for shots. Your photographer is going to have to get in there and direct, and sometimes it takes a lot of effort when dealing with large groups (herding cats sometimes comes to mind). At the same time, they shouldn’t be rude, appear stressed, or be a jerk. A sense of humor and a positive attitude is vital.
Your photographer needs to be pleasantly persistent, communicate clearly, and have a plan to get the shots done and keep the day moving.

Photographing big groups can be a challenge; a loud voice is required. We often get help from the DJ.
4. Will you shoot my wedding personally? If not, who will?
There are many photography companies who use a team of photographers or a pool of photographers who are contracted. This is totally fine but it’s nice to meet the person who will shoot your wedding personally and ask them the same questions as we are discussing here. You cannot make assumptions. It’s been several years now but Tom gained a lot of his experience by shooting contract weddings and often did not meet the bride until the actual wedding day. Most of them turned out great but if you are looking for a more personal touch, this may not be the way to go. Also keep in mind that this is how many photographers acquire their experience. Be careful and ask the hard questions.
5. What about back up plans?
By back up plans, I’m referring to if something goes wrong or unexpected. Do they have a back up camera if theirs quits working? What if they get sick? Do they have liability insurance? Photographers should have a back up camera, a variety of lenses, extra flashes, memory cards, battery packs etc. so they can keep going in the event of equipment failure. They also should network with other photographers and second shooters to be able to cover for each other if someone should be unable to fill their commitment. Tom often says that “the professional should have backups for their backups and for themselves”. Liability insurance is an absolute necessity if someone trips over a light stand or camera bag and gets hurt. Some venues require a copy of the photographer’s liability insurance certificate.
6. Do you have an assistant or second shooter?
There’s no right or wrong answer to this question but a good assistant and/or second shooter sure makes the day flow easier from a photography perspective. They can make a big difference in helping the lead photographer to do his best work. Assistants hold lights, adjust clothing, round up people, carry equipment etc. A photographer who works with a second shooter will most likely be more efficient overall, and get more images from different angles. Tom and I have this fine-tuned. Although I am the second photographer, his shots are the priority as the lead and if he needs help, that is my priority. We rarely split up on the wedding day but rather work as a team complimenting each other’s shots with different lenses, angles, vantage points etc. These complimentary shots are essential ingredients for a great wedding album.

7. Exactly what is included in your fee?
Don’t just breeze through the contract and pricing materials. Everything should be spelled out and if you have any questions get them out on the table. Make sure you know if digital negatives will be included; how many wedding images will there be; how many pages are in the wedding album; are prints included? How many hours of coverage are included? What editing, if any, is done to the images? Don’t leave anything to chance; find out what you are getting and when you will get it. A good professional photographer will not just dump images right out of the camera to a flash drive and be done. You should expect professional products of high quality, exposure and color corrected images, and outstanding customer service.
8. How long after the wedding should I expect my images?
Get an answer to this and hold them to it. When the wedding is done, the photographer’s work is just beginning. Several days are now spent on culling, exposure and color correcting, basic edits, etc., in order to prepare the images for delivery to the client. Once images are presented to the client, album preparation can take several more days. One wedding can indeed be a full time job.
Tom and I go above and beyond for our couples and try to do a lot more than many wedding photographers. We will get very excited about our client's wedding images! We will generally share a few of the images within days of the wedding, and have a picture viewing party about one month after the wedding. This is where we present our couples with a slideshow of our favorite images and deliver the crystal USB drive that we include with our packages. We will also look at wedding album options, cover materials, etc. From that meeting we will formulate a plan for the album, and take a look at other products, such as thank you cards, framed artwork, and other print options.
Every wedding photographer will have his or her own postproduction method. Make sure your know what to expect, how long the process will take, and how the images will be delivered to you. If you are given a specific time period, and that has passed, by all means contact your photographer to get a status.
9. Take me through the flow of a wedding day from the photography standpoint.
This will get your photographer talking and he should be very specific about how things will go. Of course you have say in the day but he should be able to explain everything about the flow at a typical wedding. This should be very detailed because he has done this time and time again and so you can begin to envision how everything will play out.
Tom and I explain the day while looking through an album because it shows it all in pictures and tells the story of the day and how we work. We explain this in great detail so that the bride and groom know exactly what to expect and what shots we are going after and when. We then complete a detailed timeline worksheet approximately 30 days before the wedding so that everyone is on the same page. Our brides are so well prepared that sometimes they ask us “is it time to go outside and get our backlit shots?” or “just let me know when you are ready for my Dad to come in and see me”. They know what shots are coming because they saw them in the albums and are excited about getting their own versions of these shots. Preparation is key!
Beautiful Happy Faces!Nana with her flower girl. So cute! Wedgewood Ken Caryl
Beautiful faces!!!
So after you have concluded the meeting and evaluated the answers, there is another critical factor. Assuming everything is sounding good (you like the wedding photographs you have seen and you like the answers to the questions) ask yourself; do I like this person? Does he or she mesh with my personality? Are they excited about shooting my wedding or just kind of “business as usual”. Your wedding photographer will be in your most intimate space on the biggest day of your life. You should feel a sense of comfort and trust that you don’t have to worry about your photography; THEY’VE GOT THIS!
And finally, has what you have seen and heard make you totally excited? You should be. If the answer is “YES”, this is a good candidate to shoot your wedding. But take your time; interview the other photographers you selected so you have some comparison.
Once you are sure, complete the contract; pay the deposit and BOOK THEM! Because, like all the other vendors, photographers meet with couples all the time. It’s “first come first serve” for an available date. Good luck and enjoy the process!!

]]>Tom and I are asked all the time by our couples for suggestions on where to photograph their engagement session. I start by asking if there is a place that is special to them, such as where they met, went for a special date or where he or she proposed. This has led us to photoshoots on college campuses, outside Mile High Stadium, in an intimate wine bar, in a dugout at Westminster baseball fields, underneath a special tree on Dinosaur Ridge, at the Erie Airport and even on top of a fire truck. If you and your fiancé have a location with an emotional connection, the images taken there will have a special place in your heart. It also helps to share your story if you have a wedding website or wish to display some prints at your reception! Here are images from some recent sessions:
CU, Boulder - Varsity Lake and many old buildings with lots of character. Can be crowded, so plan for a time when there is less student activity.

Horses? Yes please! Chatfield State Park, Littleton

Another idea is to plan a photoshoot at your venue. Let’s face it; you most likely paid a lot of money when you booked your venue because it is gorgeous or in a beautiful setting. Many venues will let you shoot your engagement session there if you choose a date and time that is free of other events. For Tom and I, this has led to shoots at many venues, including Red Rocks Chapel, Botanic Gardens (Chatfield and Denver), Deer Creek Valley Ranch, Wedgewood Mountain View Ranch and Ellis Ranch.

Ok, so none of the above? No worries. Below are some other places where we have shot to give you some ideas. One thing we try to do when possible, is go to two locations that are close by. This gives our couples some variety for their save the dates and/or their signing guestbook.
Remember that some locations require a pass or permit. Your photographer should be able to verify whether or not a permit is needed and if there are any costs associated with it.
Also remember this is just the tip of the iceberg. There are literally hundreds of places to shoot in the Denver area and along the front range. We are blessed to live in such an amazing state!

The wedding was set for 6:04 pm on 06/04, at Baldoria on the Water, in Lakewood. The venue was like stepping into a vineyard in Tuscany. It was spacious, had lots windows with beautiful light, and a ceremony site overlooking the water. Surrounded by loving family and friends, Stacey and Jade's wedding was absolutely beautiful and filled with emotion (which we love)! A huge congratulations and thank you to Stacey and Jade. May your marriage be filled with joy, happiness and football!
A special thanks goes to our wonderful second photographer, Kari Barrios of Captured Time Photography!

Fast forward to their wedding day, June 19, 2015. It was the first of two weddings in a 3 day period for us at Deer Creek Valley Ranch in Bailey, Colorado. We always love to shoot there; it's such a beautiful mountain venue! It turned out to be an amazing Colorado day. During the reception, their DJ completely put Dan on the spot! He asked if he had ever sung to Jessi before. Well of course he had, but little did he know, he was about do it again. Cue the Righteous Brothers; "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" (yes, like the bar scene from Top Gun), and Dan immediately owned it! That was the most amazing four minutes of any wedding reception we have ever shot. All of the men backed up Dan and were on their knees singing to Jessi. Dan is obviously multi talented; he even brewed a very special beer for the occasion called "I Do Brew". We may have had a sample or two during the evening... :-)
The pictures from this wedding are a must see!! So much fun! Congratulations to Jessi and Dan Moffitt!! And of course, a big shout out to Deer Creek Valley Ranch, and Event Planner, Emma Shinnick of Glow Wedding and Events. ~Lucy

Their September 12, 2014 wedding at Denver Botanic Gardens (during the Chihuli exhibit no less) was stunning! It was a cool and crisp day filled with warmth. Good times followed at Mile High Station. Brittany at BK Event Design did an outstanding job coordinating this wedding. I love the shoe game....it's so much fun and makes everyone laugh!! Marcie and Dario's slideshow at the reception reminded everyone how long these two have been together and now they celebrated as husband and wife!! ~Lucy

As the F-16s passed by in formation, marking the holiday, Doug took credit and joked that "he had to pull some strings to arrange that flyover". Joni's daughter Dani displayed her remarkable voice; and later in the evening, Doug's brother, Rich, an entertainer in his own right, blew everyone away with his rendition of "Fly Me To The Moon". The Mount Vernon Country Club provided incredible views of fireworks displays down the valley towards Golden. It was really a magical day.
Doug and Joni have had way more than their share of challenges in the six years since their wedding day, but faith, love and friendship stand as a testament to their devotion to each other.
Happy Anniversary, Doug and Joni! We love you guys!

In August, we decided we needed a closer look so we headed up to Devil's Thumb Ranch to have lunch. We sat outside of Heck's overlooking the beautiful meadow and mountains. The food was amazing! We met Lindsey, the Devil's Thumb Ranch representative who was working with Jen and Anthony. She was friendly, down to earth and very welcoming. The ranch was preparing for a wedding later that day. We wandered into the Timber House and were blown away by the decor and beauty of that room, as it awaited the festivities to come. As wedding photographers, it dawned on us that there would be no bad shots here. Everywhere we looked was natural splendor; this was Colorado at it's finest!
The big day arrived and it was warm and sunny. Jen, being a fan of horses, was in her element. The entire wedding party had enjoyed a trail ride that morning, and there was no better way to get rid of the wedding day jitters! Their first look was on the deck of the Broad Ax Barn, where the reception would take place. Jen's mom had prepared the decor in the barn, and it beautifully echoed the the natural feel of the ranch. Tom shot Jen and Anthony's creatives in the meadow as the horses grazed around us, before the ceremony. It was so much fun! A rainbow appeared, right on cue, as we shot their portraits after the ceremony. It was a perfect wedding day and we are so thrilled that we were part of it! We would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to Jen and Anthony and Devil's Thumb Ranch!! ENJOY! - Lucy

We've managed to build some great friendships during our engagement shoots. Looking back at 2013, one of our favorite shoots was way back in early March. Anthony and Jen brought their Golden Retriever, Rylan, and we explored downtown Longmont. We became good friends during that shoot, and we were blessed to be able to shoot their incredible wedding in October. We'll share some of their wedding images in the next blog post, but for now, here are some of our favorite engagement images from their shoot.

Back in July, I had the opportunity to get to know Megan and Greg. We had scheduled their engagement shoot on a hot day down at the Denver Botanic Gardens. If you haven't been there, you definitely should go check it out. You can spend hours exploring, and that's exactly what we did. Of course, Megan and Greg brought several different outfits, including Greg's full dress Marine uniform, which would have been comfortable on a 50 degree day; but it was a little toasty on a 90 plus degree day. We were able to get lots of incredible photos at this beautiful venue!
They chose Arrowhead Golf Club as the location for their wedding and reception. I had been looking forward to shooting a wedding there for a long time, and was grateful that they chose me to photograph their wedding. Their special day finally came in September… at the end of a week which saw historic flooding in Colorado. They really lucked out with their timing, because other than a few sprinkles during some of the formal photos, their outdoor wedding stayed dry.
Last week, we were able to show off some of our work at the Rocky Mountain Bridal Show, and the photo of Megan dominating the boys at the bar was a huge hit!
Here are a few of my favorites from their engagement shoot and their wedding day!

It's been a busy summer! We shot Katie's senior portraits back in July:
Katie helped us schedule her boyfriend, Chad, for senior portraits as well. It took two rainouts; but we were finally able to shoot his portrait last week.
As we were driving up to Brighton we were in yet another downpour. But, by the time we were able to shoot, the sky had cleared and things were starting to dry out a bit. We picked an old abandoned silo facility right next to the highway between Brighton and Fort Lupton. Apparently it's been abandoned for approximately 20 years; the windows are all broken out, there's graffiti everywhere and some say it's even haunted. OK... I just made that part up, but you get the picture. It was kind of creepy, but we managed to get some good images, before Fort Lupton's finest showed up with lights flashing. It seems that someone reported a possible vandalism in progress. No worries. We were starting to lose light anyway. The officer actually ended up thanking us for giving him the opportunity to turn on his lights and siren. He was soon joined by a Weld County Sheriff's deputy who explained that he had jurisdiction, and that we would have to leave.
So, with fond memories of my truck catching fire at my own senior portrait shoot (a pretty long time ago...), we packed it in for the night. Chad will always remember his senior pictures, and the evening we overcame the hazards of the haunted silo to take his portrait.
Here are a few of his images:
We had a blast last Saturday night over at my old friend, Doug's house. Doug and I go back to 8th grade; he's been a buddy of mine for most of my life. Doug is the owner of Alpine Printing www.alpineprinting.net in Arvada. He's been looking for a few images for his website, so we set up an impromptu studio session in his basement. We shot about a hundred images, ate some food, and drank a little wine. Of course, I have lots of ideas for our next session. We'll try to squeeze that in, sometime in the next few weeks or so...
Here are a few from Saturday night.
